2009: The amazing canoe journey

v March 10, 2009 – Celebration of House of Awakened Culture.   SON joined the Suquamish Tribe to celebrate the culmination of well over one hundred years of effort by the Suquamish Tribe to replace Old-Man-House.

v April 25, 2009 – Virginia Cowling's life was celebrated with a memorial picnic at the Suquamish Tribe's new Cowling Creek Salmon Center, coinciding with the Tribe's 32nd annual release of salmon into Cowling Creek.  See Kitsap Sun article.

v May, 2009Earth Mover Award.  SON honored Rob Purser on May 8th by presenting him with the Earth Mover Award gift in the beautiful new Tribal Fisheries office. The successful return of Old Man House Park to the Suquamish Tribe was chosen by Natural Home magazine to receive their Earth Mover Award. Rob was recognized for his instrumental work on the Old Man House project. He was presented with a handmade bowl from Peru and a rock carved with the words Earth Mover.

v May 17thSON 8th Annual Potluck & Celebration at House of Awakened Culture - Noel Purser opened the potluck with a blessing spoken in Lushootseed, followed by tribal Chairman Leonard Forsman's presentation about the planning and funding of the House of Awakened Culture.  his year SON honored Marilyn Wandrey, Suquamish Tribal Elder and Arlis Stewart.  Glynis Burns remembered Virginia Cowling who was a long time member of SON.

v July 16th  Suquamish Citizen Advisory Committee Open House.  SON had a booth at this well attended community event.

v Summer 2009 - Library display.  SON created and maintained a display of educational materials at the local library.

  v August 2009 Canoe Journey  SON volunteers help plan and staff the largest gathering before a Suquamish long house since the days of Chief Kitsap himself!! This was the 20th anniversary of the contemporary canoe voyages begun during the "Paddle to Seattle 1989" for the Washington State Centennial. 2009 Canoe Journey articles, pictures and videos.

vFall 2009  Planning for Movie Night   SON began planning for movie nights at the House of Awakened Culture, launched in January, 2010.
